Lesson 12

One, Holy, Catholic, And Apostolic Church

In this lesson we will continue to examine our belief in the Holy Catholic Church. We will look at the four marks of the Church, and the Communion of Saints.

Lesson Vocabulary

  • Marks of the Church
    :
The traits or characteristics by which we know the Church. The four marks of the Church are: one, holy, catholic, and apostolic.
  • Holy
    :
To be set apart by God. We do not make ourselves holy; rather, holiness comes from God’s initiative. We are holy because God is holy and he calls us to Himself. The second mark of the Church is that the Church is holy.
  • Catholic
    :
Universal. The third mark of the Church is that the Church is catholic, or universal. This means that the Church is for all people in every time and place. Her truths apply to all people throughout time.
  • Apostolic
    :
Founded by Christ on the Apostles and governed through their successors, the bishops.
  • Communion of the Saints
    :
The union in Christ of all those who have been saved, on earth and in Heaven or Purgatory.
