Lesson 7

The Holy Spirit and Prayer

In this lesson your children will learn that the only way we can truly get to know the Son is through the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit dwells in our hearts, which is why we call our bodies temples of the Holy Spirit. It is through Him that we can know Jesus, who reveals to us the Father. We can gain this knowledge only through prayer, and it is the Holy Spirit moving within us that allows us to pray.

Lesson Vocabulary
  • Baptism
(n.): The first Sacrament of Initiation, which makes us members of the Church, forgives sins, and gives new life in Christ. It is necessary for salvation. The celebration of Baptism involves being immersed in water, or having water poured over one鈥檚 head three times, in the name of the Holy Trinity: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
  • Pentecost
(n.): The day when Jesus sent the Holy Spirit upon Mary and the Apostles and the Church was born. Fifty days after Jesus鈥 Resurrection (10 days after His Ascension into Heaven), Mary and the Apostles gathered in the Upper Room and were filled with the Holy Spirit, who came in a rush of wind and appeared as tongues of fire over their heads.
  • Twelve Fruits of the Holy Spirit
Attributes or perfections that the Holy Spirit forms in our souls when He lives inside of us. These Twelve Fruits are: charity, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, generosity, gentleness, faithfulness, modesty, self-control, and chastity.
