Jesus’ Unconditional Self-Offering

Jesus’ sacrifice on the Cross is the culmination of His earthly mission and a model for all Christians.

Lesson Vocabulary

  • Passover
    :
    The central event of the Exodus when God instructed the Israelites to sacrifice an unblemished lamb and mark their doorposts with its blood in order to be passed over by the final plague of death. God commanded that the Israelites remember this original Passover every year with a memorial meal.
  • Sarx
    :
    Greek word for “body” which refers to the “flesh” or the corporeal body.
  • Sōma
    :
    Greek word for “body” which refers to the entire person, similar to “body” in “somebody” in English.
  • Covenant
    :
    A solemn agreement between persons that makes a sacred and permanent family relationship.
  • Anamnesis
    :
    Greek work for the remembering of an event in a way that makes the event present again, as Christ commanded the Apostles to offer Holy Mass in remembrance of Him.
  • Baptism of Desire
    :
    A Catechumen, or a person who is preparing to be baptized, who dies before receiving Baptism is assured salvation through her desire for Baptism, repentance for sin, and charity.
  • Evangelize
    :
    Carrying forth the Good News of salvation to every sector of the human race so that by its strength it may enter the hearts of men and renew the human race.
  • Seven Deadly Sins
    :
    Certain sins that should be especially guarded against because they are likely to lead to other sin. They are: pride, greed, envy, anger, lust, gluttony, and sloth. Also known as capital sins.
