Lesson 14

Why Believe in the Catholic Church?

Christ founded the Catholic Church to carry on St. Peter’s authority and lead the faithful towards Christ.

Lesson Vocabulary

  • Body of Christ
    :
The People of God make up the Body of Christ. A body has many parts, just like the People of God is made up of different people with different gifts and talents. Though we are all different, as the Body of Christ we are one body with Christ as our head. Also refers to the consecrated Communion host we receive in the Eucharist, which is the true Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Christ.
  • Koinōnia
    :
Greek word for Christian community, fellowship, and spiritual communion.
  • Church
    :
The community of disciples founded by Jesus that will exist until the end of time. The Bride of Christ, the Church, is one, holy, Catholic, and apostolic.
  • Protestant Reformation
    :
A 16th century revolt began by Martin Luther that divided and eventually splintered Christianity. Many Christian churches formed as a result of this split, which are known as Protestant churches, or denominations. Though Jesus desires that His Church be one, all baptized Christians are brothers and sisters in Christ.
  • Prime Minister
    :
The second highest governing authority in a kingdom, who governs in place of the king at his command.
  • Council of Jerusalem
    :
The first council of the Church, held around AD 50, when many Church leaders, including St. Paul, traveled to Jerusalem to ask the Apostles to resolve questions of whether Jewish law bound new Gentile converts.
