Lesson 9

Evidence for Jesus' Divinity

In this chapter your students will learn that…
■ There are sources outside of Scripture that verify Jesus’ historical existence, His reputation, His authority as a teacher, and His Crucifixion.
■ The earliest information we have about Jesus is found in the kerygmas. These are brief texts that proclaim in a simple way the core teachings of the Gospel message.
■ The way in which the Apostles preached about Jesus reveal several striking patterns that give us confidence in the truth of their claims.
■ St. Paul records a list of the many witnesses to the Risen Jesus and shows that these witnesses had everything to lose and nothing to gain by bearing false witness to the Resurrection of Christ.

Lesson Vocabulary

  • Kerygmas
    :
Brief Christian texts that express simple credal teachings. These were the first proclamations of the Early Church, written within a decade of Jesus’ Death and Resurrection, and preserved in the New Testament within the Acts of the Apostles and the Letters of St. Paul.
