Solomon and the Kingdoms of Israel and Judah

David’s son, Solomon, ruled after him and was granted the gift of great wisdom from God, but after his death, the kingdom split into two kingdoms and fell into idolatry.

  • Queen Mother
    :
    (n.): The title given to the mothers of kings in the line of David who reigned as queen alongside their sons.
  • Queen of Heaven
    :
    (n.): A title given to Jesus’ mother, the Virgin Mary, who, after her Assumption into Heaven, sits at the right hand of her Son, who is King of the Universe and who fulfills all God’s promises to David.
  • Intercession
    :
    (n.): Prayer for the needs of others.
  • Temple of Jerusalem
    :
    (n.): God’s dwelling place on earth during the time of the Davidic Kingdom. It was the primary Jewish house of worship destroyed and rebuilt three times between 1000–20 BC. All that remains of the third Temple is the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem.
  • The Holy of Holies
    :
    (n.): The inner-most sanctuary of the tabernacle in the Temple of Jerusalem. It housed the Ark of the Covenant and was separate from the outer sanctuary by an ornate veil or curtain.
  • Todah
    :
    (n.): Hebrew for “thanksgiving.” It was the greatest form of worship in the Temple of Jerusalem, consisting of a sacred meal of bread and wine freely offered in sacrifice by a person to express thanksgiving to God for some good thing. The Todah foreshadows the sacred meal of bread and wine Jesus changed into His Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity at the Last Supper and that we still receive today in the Eucharist (Greek for “thanksgiving”) at every Mass.
  • Kingdom of Israel
    :
    (n.): The name of the northern kingdom, with its capital in Samaria, after the original Kingdom of David split into two.
  • Kingdom of Judah
    :
    (n.): The name of the southern kingdom, with its capital in Jerusalem, after the original Kingdom of David split into two.
  • Samaria
    :
    (n.): The capital city of the Northern Kingdom of Israel.
  • Jerusalem
    :
    (n.): The captial city of the united Kingdom of Israel under kings David and Solomon, and later the capital city of the Southern Kingdom of Judah.
  • Prophet
    :
    (n.): A person who spoke for God and made known God’s message to His people. They proclaimed hope and salvation if the people would repent and worship God and foretold destruction and exile if they did not. From the Greek prophetes meaning “one who speaks for another.”
  • Baal
    :
    (n.): A Canaanite fertility god whom the people of Israel and Judah frequently turned to in idolatrous worship.
