Lesson 14

The Gospels

The four Gospels—Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John—are the “heart of all the Scriptures ‘because they are our principal source for the life and teaching of the Incarnate Word, our Savior’” (CCC 125).

Lesson Vocabulary

  • Synoptic Gospels
    :
(n.): The Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke, which present the story of Christ’s life in a similar way and even borrow stories and the structure of their Gospels from each other. The word synoptic comes from the Greek for “viewed together.”
  • Heresy
    :
(n.): The obstinate denial after Baptism of a truth which must be believed with divine and Catholic faith.
  • Gnostic Gospels
    :
(n.): Ancient books about the life of Christ that are infused with theology that reflects the Gnostic heresy rampant at the time. Two are falsely attributed to St. Thomas the Apostle and St. Mary Magdalene
  • Gnosticism
    :
(n.): The name given to a heresy of the early Church that taught, among other things, that Jesus was not fully human, the material world was evil, and salvation was achieved through secret knowledge, or gnosis.
  • Apocryphal Gospels
    :
(n.): The name given to heretical non-canonical writings that purported to be additional accounts of the life of Christ, but were written by members of heretical groups, such as the Gnostics. They denied fundamental truths about Jesus, such as the reality of the Incarnation and the Pashcal Mystery, contradicted in sometimes odd ways stories of the life of Christ from the four inspired Gospels, and claimed to contain secret knowledge and magic spells for the Gnostic sects who might read them.
  • Kingdom of Heaven (Kingdom of God)
    :
(n.): God’s reign, or rule, over all things. During His public ministry, Jesus proclaimed that the Kingdom of God was at hand. The Church is the seed, or beginning, of the Kingdom here on earth. The Kingdom will be fulfilled in Heaven.
  • Evangelization
    :
(n.): The act of sharing the Good News of the Gospel message of salvation. At the command of Jesus, the Church’s mission is to evangelize the whole world.
  • Christology
    :
(n.): A branch of theology that seeks to understand the nature and mystery of Jesus Christ.
  • The Book of Signs
    :
(n.): The first half of the Gospel of John that is focused on seven signs, or miracles, of Christ that each attest to His divinity.
  • The Book of Glory
    :
(n.): The second half of the Gospel of John that is focused on the events of Christ’s Passion, Death, and Resurrection beginning with Holy Thursday through Easter Sunday and the Resurrection appearances.
