Lesson 15

The Early Life of Christ

Jesus is the Word who became flesh, the Son of God, who was with God from all eternity and is fully God and fully man.

Lesson Vocabulary

  • Pharisees
    :
(n.): A Jewish sect that strictly observed the Mosaic Law in its ceremonies, practices, and oral tradition. They believed in the immortality of the soul and the resurrection of the body at the end of time.
  • Gentiles
    :
    (n.): People of non-Jewish ethnicity
  • Sadducees
    :
(n.): A powerful group of leaders in Jewish society who believed the only way for the Jewish faith to survive was for the people to cooperate with the Gentiles. They believed that only the Pentateuch was canonical Scripture and rejected traditional interpretations and later additions to the Law and covenants contained in Scripture (specifically the covenant with David). They did not believe in the afterlife, the resurrection of the body, or supernatural beings such as angels.
  • Annunciation
    :
(n.): The visit of the angel Gabriel to Mary to inform her that she was to be the mother of the Savior. After giving her consent to God’s Word, Mary became the mother of Jesus by the power of the Holy Spirit.
  • Immaculate Conception
    :
The dogma of the Church that teaches that the Virgin Mary was conceived without the stain of Original Sin so that she could bear the Son of God within her. Mary was prepared by God to be a holy vessel for our salvation. (508, 744)
  • Fiat
    :
(n.): Mary’s “yes,” or consent to God’s will for her at the Annunciation and all throughout her life. Latin for “let it be done.”
  • Magi
    :
(n.): The wise men who came from the East to pay homage to the newborn Savior.
  • Hidden Years
    :
(n.): The name given to the 17 years between the last Gospel story of Jesus’ childhood and when He began His public ministry around the age of 30. It can be assumed that during these years Jesus led a normal human life doing the things all humans do with the exception of sin.
  • Christ
    :
(n.): Anointed one, from the Greek Christos.
