Lesson 10

The Story of the Catholic Priesthood in Salvation History

The priesthood of Jesus is the definitive priesthood because He is fully God and fully man both the high priest offering the sacrifice and the victim being offered for the forgiveness of sins.

Lesson Vocabulary

  • Tabernacle
    :
A tabernacle is a special container that keeps the Eucharist safe. There is a tabernacle in every Catholic church.
  • Todah
    :
(n.): Hebrew for “thanksgiving.” It was the greatest form of worship in the Temple of Jerusalem, consisting of a sacred meal of bread and wine freely offered in sacrifice by a person to express thanksgiving to God for some good thing. The Todah foreshadows the sacred meal of bread and wine Jesus changed into His Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity at the Last Supper and that we still receive today in the Eucharist (Greek for “thanksgiving”) at every Mass.
  • Levitical Priesthood
    :
(n.): The descendants of Levi set apart by God to serve the Temple and offer the sacrifices required by Mosaic Law.
  • In Persona Christi Capitis
    :
(adv.): Latin phrase describing how bishops and priests are ordained to act “in the person of Christ the head” when they perform their priestly functions. Priests do not preach, sanctify, and govern by their own authority, but by the authority given them by Christ, the head of the Church, to act in His person.
  • Pope
    :
(n.): The successor of St. Peter as bishop of Rome and Supreme Pontiff of the universal Catholic Church. The pope exercises a primacy of authority as the vicar of Christ on earth and the shepherd of the whole Church.
  • The Last Supper
    :
(n.): The last meal, a Passover, Jesus ate with His Apostles on the night before He died, during which He instituted the Eucharist.
