The Two Great Commandments and the Sermon on the Mount

The Ten Commandments are summarized and fulfilled by Jesus’ two Great Commandments: love God above all else and love your neighbor as yourself.

Lesson Vocabulary

  • Great Commandments
    :
    (n.): Jesus’ summary of the Law and the prophets: Love God with all your heart, soul, and mind, and love your neighbor as yourself (Cf. Matt. 22:37–40).
  • Sermon on the Mount
    :
    (n.): Jesus’ most important moral teaching, found in Matthew 5, in which He explains the divine principles of justice guiding us to the narrow path that leads to Heaven
  • Contrition
    :
    (n.): Sorrow of the soul and detestation of sin together with the resolution not to sin again. Contrition motivated by love for God is called perfect contrition. When it is motivated by fear of punishment, it is called imperfect contrition.
  • Absolution
    :
    (n.): Forgiveness of a person’s sins by a priest acting in the Person of Christ.
  • Peace
    :
    (n.): The security and stability of a just order. We receive peace in the Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation because our relationship with God and His Church is reconciled, or made just.
  • Peacemakers
  • Fraternal Correction
    :
    (n.): The loving reprimand of our neighbor with the purpose of protecting him from sin. In some circumstances fraternal correction can be a positive obligation flowing from Christ’s command to love one another.
