The Law and Jesus' Church

The Magisterium’s role is to proclaim, clarify, and explain Christ’s revelation and those actions that are incompatible with it.

Lesson Vocabulary

  • Magisterium
    :
    (n.): The living teaching authority of the Catholic Church whose task it is to give authentic interpretation of the Word of God found in Scripture and Tradition, and to ensure the faithfulness of the Church to the teachings of the Apostles in matters of faith and morals. This authority is exercised by all of the world’s bishops in union with the pope, and by the pope alone when he defines infallibly a doctrine of faith or morals.
  • Sacred Scripture
    :
    (n.): The written record of God’s revelation of Himself. contained in the Old and New Testaments. It was composed by human authors inspired by the Holy Spirit. The Bible. The Word of God.
  • Sacred Tradition
    :
    (n.): The living transmission of the Gospel message in the Church.
  • Infallibility
    :
    (n.): The Charism of being infallible (incapable of error) in matters of faith and morals.
  • Ex Cathedra
    :
    (adv.): A phrase describing a pope’s definitive and infallible teaching as being given from his authority as the successor of St. Peter. Latin for “from the chair.”
  • Ecumenical Council
    :
    (n.): A meeting of all the world’s bishops together in union with the pope.
  • Extraordinary Universal Magisterium
    :
    (n.): The teaching office of the Church expressed in definitive acts: conciliar decrees and ex cathedra papal pronouncements.
  • Ordinary Magisterium
    :
    (n.): The consistent teaching of the Church exercised by the pope and his predecessors and the bishops in union with him through encyclicals, papal letters, and other documents.
  • Canon Law
    :
    (n.): The body of universal rules and regulations that govern the Roman Catholic Church.
  • Precepts of the Church
    :
    (n.): The minimum requirement for Christian living. The precepts are: to attend Mass and to rest from servile work on Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation, to confess our sins to a priest at least once a year, to receive our Lord Jesus Christ in the Holy Eucharist at least once a year during the Easter season, to observe the days of abstinence and fasting, and to contribute to the support of the Church.
