Lesson 16

The Sacraments

The seven Sacraments are the primary means by which God distributes His Grace.

Lesson Vocabulary

  • Deify
    :
(v.): To make like God. We receive sanctifying, or deifying grace, in Baptism as a free gift from God, a gift which infuses our souls with His own divine life.
  • Passover
    :
(n.): The central event of the Exodus. The final plague God sent upon Egypt was the plague of the death of the first born of every family in Egypt. By sacrificing a lamb, spreading its blood on their doorposts, and eating its roasted flesh in a sacred meal of bread and wine, the Israelite homes would be passed over by the plague of death. God also commanded that the Israelites remember this original Passover event every year with a memorial meal. The original Passover foreshadows Christ’s own sacrifice on the Cross.
  • Communion of Saints
    :
(n.): The unity in Christ of all the redeemed, those souls in Heaven who enjoy the Beatific Vision, those souls in Purgatory enduring purification, and those souls on earth still working out their salvation.
  • Liturgy of the Word
    :
(n.): The first part of the Mass in which we receive the written Word of God. Here, the Scriptures are proclaimed and the priest teaches in a homily. We also join together in prayer for others and profess our faith.
  • Liturgy of the Eucharist
    :
(n.): The second part of the Mass in which Christ's sacrifice on the Cross is made present again. It includes the preparation of the gifts, the Eucharistic prayer, the Communion rite, and prayer after Communion.
  • Ecclesial Communities
    :
(n.): The name for Protestant faith communities which are broken away from the Catholic Church and so cannot properly be called “churches.”
  • Reformation
    :
(n.): A revolt began by Martin Luther that divided and eventually splintered Christianity in sixteenth- century Europe.
  • Orthodox Churches
    :
(n.): Eastern Churches not in full communion with the Catholic Church who, though separated from her as a result of the Great Schism of 1054, nevertheless share a deep but imperfect communion with the Catholic Church by reason of our common Baptism, the procession of the Creed, and the profession of true Sacraments by reason of the apostolic succession of their priesthood.
  • Apostolic Succession
    :
(n.): The handing on of apostolic preaching and authority from the Apostles to their successors, the bishops, through the laying on of hands, as a permanent office in the Church
  • Temporal Punishment
    :
(n.): The consequences for sin that remain even after sins are forgiven and for which we make reparation in this life and in the sufferings of Purgatory. Temporal describes things that happen in time. Temporal punishment is one of two consequences of sin; the other is eternal (without end) punishment. Eternal punishment is taken away with forgiveness of sins in the Sacrament of Confession.
  • Fasting
    :
(n.): Voluntarily going without food, typically observed by eating no more than one full meal and two smaller meals that together do not equal one meal.
  • Almsgiving
    :
(n.): Donating money or goods to the poor and doing other acts of charity.
  • Indulgence
    :
(n.): A partial or complete remission of the temporal punishment due to sins which have already been forgiven. The Church dispenses indulgences under certain conditions from the stored treasure house of satisfaction gained by Christ and the saints. The faithful can gain indulgences for themselves or for those who have already died.
