Lesson 31

The Holy Spirit Teaches and Guides Us

The Holy Spirit teaches us how to live holy lives, how to follow Jesus, how to pray, and how to share the Gospel with others.

Lesson Vocabulary

  • Confirmation
    :
The Sacrament of Initiation that strengthens the outpouring of the Holy Spirit received in Baptism. Confirmation also gives to us special strength to spread and protect our Catholic faith. The celebration of Confirmation involves the bishop laying his hands upon the person and praying for God’s blessing. This is a sign of being chosen. The bishop will also anoint the person with holy oil as a sign of the gift of the Holy Spirit. (1275, 1316, 1320)
  • Gifts of the Holy Spirit
    :
Unique characteristics that Jesus possessed. The Holy Spirit gives these gifts to us at our Baptism and strengthens them in Confirmation so that we can be more like Jesus. They are wisdom, knowledge, understanding, counsel, fortitude, piety, and fear of the Lord
  • Wisdom
    :
A Gift of the Holy Spirit that helps us respect and love God. It perfects our faith, because it helps us to see God for who He is. (1845)
  • Fortitude
    :
“To persevere in what is right.” A Cardinal Virtue that helps us continue in when faced with difficulty.
  • Piety
    :
A Gift of the Holy Spirit that helps us show reverence for holy things and for God. It helps us to have the right attitude toward God and to worship Him because we love Him. (1845)
