The Virtues

When we choose the good consistently, it becomes a habit or virtue.

Lesson Vocabulary

  • Faith
    :
    The Theological Virtue by which we believe in God and all that He has revealed to us, as well as all that His Church teaches us to believe. (176, 1841)
  • Fortitude
    :
    “To persevere in what is right.” A Cardinal Virtue that helps us continue in when faced with difficulty.
  • Hope
    :
    The Theological Virtue by which we desire the Kingdom of God and eternal life, and place our trust in all of God’s promises to us. (1841)
  • Justice
    :
    “Right treatment.” A Cardinal Virtue that helps us to give everyone the good that he or she deserves. (1834, 1839)
  • Love
    :
    The Theological Virtue by which we love God above all things and our neighbor as ourselves for the love of God. Also called charity. (1841)
  • Prudence
    :
    “Right judgement.” A Cardinal Virtue that helps guide all of the other virtues because it helps us to discern the true good in every circumstance. It helps us to make the right decision at the right time and to find the best way to achieve a good outcome. (1834, 1839)
  • Temperance
    :
    “Right amount” A Cardinal Virtue that helps us to find a balance between too much and too little of the good things in life.
