Lesson 15

Jesus Teaches Us to Love

The cardinal virtues are prudence, justice, temperance, and fortitude and the theological virtues are faith, hope, and love.

Lesson Vocabulary

  • Agape
    :
    Greek for “good will” of “desire for the good of another.” It is often used to describe the highest form of love. It is the love of God for human beings and the love human beings are called to for God and for one another.
  • Charity
    :
    A gift of grace from God that helps us follow God’s plan for us. The Holy Spirit gives people the grace to run soup kitchens, teach catechism classes, and do other such acts of service. The Holy Spirit helps people to lead music and to read at Mass. The Holy Spirit uses all the good works of people to make the Church healthy and strong and energetic.
  • Eros
    :
    Greek for “passion” or “desire.” It is often used to describe romantic love.
  • Faith
    :
    The Theological Virtue by which we believe in God and all that He has revealed to us, as well as all that His Church teaches us to believe. (176, 1841)
  • Fortitude
    :
    “To persevere in what is right.” A Cardinal Virtue that helps us continue in when faced with difficulty.
  • Hope
    :
    The Theological Virtue by which we desire the Kingdom of God and eternal life, and place our trust in all of God’s promises to us. (1841)
  • Justice
    :
    A Cardinal Virtue that helps us give God and neighbor their due.
  • Philia
    :
    The Greek word for “friendship.” It is the love between friends.
  • Prudence
    :
    “Right judgement.” A Cardinal Virtue that helps guide all of the other virtues because it helps us to discern the true good in every circumstance. It helps us to make the right decision at the right time and to find the best way to achieve a good outcome. (1834, 1839)
  • Storge
    :
    is the feeling of affection or enjoyment we have for someone or something.
  • Temperance
    :
    “Right amount” A Cardinal Virtue that helps us to find a balance between too much and too little of the good things in life.
  • Virtue
    :
    A habit of doing what is good. We build virtues through our own efforts and with God’s grace. (1833)
