Lesson 16

The Fall and Its Aftermath

God gave Adam and Eve one command: not to eat from the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, and they disobeyed that command.

Lesson Vocabulary

  • Original Sin
    :
The first sin of Adam and Eve, which brought pain, suffering, and death into the world. Because we are all descendants of Adam and Eve, we are all born with Original Sin on our souls. We need to be baptized to remove the stain of Original Sin. The effects of Original Sin remain, however. For example, we tend to sin, we suffer, and we die.
  • Sin
    :
A sin is something that we say, do, think, or fail to do that does not love God, our neighbor, or ourselves, as God has taught us.
  • Concupiscence
    :
A tendency to sin that is an effect of Original Sin. Even though Baptism erases the stain of Original Sin, the tendency to sin remains.
  • Baptism
    :
The first Sacrament of Initiation. In Baptism we are born into new life in Jesus. We need Baptism to go to Heaven.
  • Garden of Eden
    :
The beautiful garden where God placed Adam and Eve. God gave Adam the job of caring for the Garden and everything in it.
  • Genesis
    :
“Beginning.” The book of Genesis is the first book of the Bible. It tells stories about the start of the world and the start of our relationship with God.
