Lesson 25

Who Is Mary?

Mary is the Mother of God, the Queen of Heaven, and the New Eve.

Lesson Vocabulary

  • Mother of God (Theotokos)
    :
A title for Mary that describes her motherhood of Jesus, who is fully human and fully God. Theotokos is Greek for “Mother of God.”
  • Queen of Heaven
    :
A title for Mary that describes how she reigns in Heaven as queen with her son, Jesus, the King. As Queen of Heaven, Mary is seated at the right hand of her son. She intercedes for us from Heaven.
  • Assumption
    :
According to tradition, at the end of Mary’s earthly life, she was assumed, or taken up, into Heaven body and soul. Mary is now in Heaven with her son, crowned Queen of Heaven and seated at His right hand. The Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Assumption every year on August 15th.
  • Immaculate Conception
    :
(n.): From the beginning of her life, the Virgin Mary was saved from Original Sin so that she could bear the Son of God within her. Mary was prepared by God to be a holy vessel for our salvation
  • New Eve
    :
A title for Mary that describes how eternal life became possible through her obedience to God. Just as sin and death entered the world through the disobedience of Eve, Mary’s obedience to God led to the birth of God’s Son, Jesus Christ, who died on the Cross and rose from the dead to save us from sin.
