Lesson 5

The Sacrifice of the Mass

The Mass is a representation of Christ’s sacrifice on the Cross.

Lesson Vocabulary

  • Lamb of God
    :
A title given to Jesus that describes His sacrifice to free us from sin. Just like the sacrifice of the Passover lamb freed the Israelites from slavery, Jesus’s sacrifice frees us from death and sin in a new Passover. (1409) Jesus is the Lamb of God whose sacrifice on the Cross freed us from sin and spiritual death. Just as the Israelites had to eat flesh of the Paschal Lamb for the sacrifice to be complete, Jesus gave us His Body and Blood in the Eucharist at the Last Supper for us to receive the blessings of the Passover of the New Covenant.
  • Liturgy of the Word
    :
The Liturgy of the Word is the first major part of the Mass, in which we receive the written Word of God.
  • Liturgy of the Eucharist
    :
The Liturgy of the Eucharist is the second major part of the Mass, in which we receive the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist.
