Lesson 3

The Celebration of the Sacrament of the Eucharist

The matter, form, minister, recipient, effects, and symbols of the Sacrament of the Eucharist.

Lesson Vocabulary

  • Eucharist
    :
The Eucharist is the Sacrament in which we receive the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of our Lord Jesus Christ under the appearances of bread and wine. The Eucharist is the source and summit of our Christian life. It is spiritual food for the soul. It is not just a symbol but is Jesus' true flesh and blood.
  • Todah
    :
The primary liturgy of the Jerusalem Temple. It means “thanksgiving” and consisted of a sacred meal of bread and wine. The Todah foreshadows the sacred meal of bread and wine Jesus changed into His Body and Blood at the Last Supper and which we still receive today in the Eucharist at every Mass. (1407)
  • Qahal
    :
Hebrew for “assembly” or “congregation.” It is one of the first words used in the Old Testament to describe the People of God, the Chosen People whom He had called out or assembled in His name. The qahal of the Old Testament was the seed of the Church in the New Testament, which God intended to build from the beginning. (777, 810)
  • Liturgy
    :
Our public worship as Christians. The Mass is the greatest example and model of the liturgy.
  • Communion
    :
The receiving of the Eucharist. When we receive the Eucharist we are united to Jesus Himself and made members of the one Body of Christ.
  • Memorial
    :
A memorial is a way of remembering the past. The word remember means “to make present again.” In the Eucharist, Jesus’ sacrifice on the Cross is made present to us again.
  • Mystery
    :
A visible sign of God’s grace. Mystery is derived from the Greek word mysterion, which is interchangeable with the Greek word sacramentum, from which we derive the word “Sacrament.” Sacraments are mysteries, and mysteries is another word for Sacraments.
  • Mass
    :
The Mass is the liturgical celebration and memorial of Christ’s sacrifice on the Cross and Resurrection from the dead.
