Lesson 4

The Story of the Sacrifice of the Mass

The Eucharist is a new manna that spiritually feeds us on our earthly journey until we reach Heaven.

Lesson Vocabulary

  • Sacrifice
    :
In ancient times, people offered the life of an animal to God as way to praise God by, to give thanks to God, to honor a new beginning or to swear an oath, or as an expression of sorrow for sin. The original Passover required the sacrifice of a lamb. Jesus offered Himself as the supreme sacrifice to redeem all people from sin. (561, 1407)
  • Original Sin
    :
The first sin of Adam and Eve that brought pain, suffering, and death into the world. Because we are all descendants of Adam and Eve we are all born with Original Sin in our souls. We need to be baptized to remove the stain of Original Sin. The effects of Original Sin remain, however. For example, we tend to sin, we suffer, and die. (417, 418, 419, 1279, 1714)
  • Manna
    :
Food that God provided to the Israelites from Heaven as they wandered the desert for 40 years. It is unknown what manna really was, but the Israelites called it “bread from Heaven” and were physically nourished by it. It foreshadows the bread of life, Christ’s own Body and Blood given to us as spiritual food, which, unlike manna, gives eternal life.
