The Use of Scripture at Holy Mass

God speaks to His people through the Sacred Scriptures proclaimed at Mass.

Lesson Vocabulary

  • Liturgy of the Word
    :
    The Liturgy of the Word is the first major part of the Mass, in which we receive the written Word of God.
  • Liturgy of the Eucharist
    :
    The Liturgy of the Eucharist is the second major part of the Mass, in which we receive the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist.
  • Alleluia
    :
    A song or acclamation of praise before the Gospels are read at Mass.
  • Homily
    :
    A teaching drawn from the day’s readings given by a priest (or deacon) at Mass.
  • Profession of Faith
    :
    A public statement of belief made by the faithful during Sunday Masses and Holy Days of Obligation. It can either be the Nicene Creed, the Apostles’ Creed, or a renewal of baptismal promises.
  • Universal Prayer or Prayer of the Faithful
    :
    The prayer of the assembly during every Mass that concludes the Liturgy of the Word. The faithful entrust the needs of the Church, the needs of the world, and their own needs to God.
