God Calls Abraham

God called Abraham to enter into a covenant with Him and to be the father of His Chosen People.

Lesson Vocabulary

  • Abraham
    :
    “Father of a great many.” He was the first Patriarch and the “father of faith” to whom God made great promises and entered into covenant. His descendants would become the Chosen People.
  • Covenant
    :
    A sacred permanent bond of family relationship. God entered in a series of covenants with mankind throughout Salvation History to invite us to be part of His divine family and to prepare us gradually and in stages and in words and deeds to receive the gift of salvation. (68-96)
  • Heir
    :
    Someone who inherits one’s land, possessions, and titles after they die. In the ancient world, one’s heir was typically their first-born son.
  • Nation
    :
    God promised Abraham that his descendants would be a great nation. This includes possessing land.
  • Kingship
    :
    God promised Abraham that his descendants would have a great name, which means that they would be a dynasty of great kings.
  • Blessing
    :
    God promised Abraham that his descendants would be more numerous than the start and through them all the families of the earth would be blessed.
