Lesson 2

The Church Is a Visible Sign of God’s Presence

The Church is both a visible society and a spiritual community.

Lesson Vocabulary

  • Church
    :
The community of disciples founded by Jesus that will exist until the end of time. The Church is at the same time human and divine. It is the gathering of God’s people, whom He calls, on earth and it is the mystical Body of Christ. The Church is also the Temple of the Holy Spirit, who gives life to the Body of Christ and unites its members.
  • Authority
    :
Power or influence over another’s thought, opinion, or behavior. Jesus gave His authority to Peter and the Apostles and to their successors, the bishops.
  • Infallibility
    :
Being without error. The Magisterium of the Catholic Church (the pope and all of the world’s bishops in union with the pope) are incapable of error when teaching about matters of faith and morals in a definitive way.
  • Pope
    :
The pope is the Bishop of Rome and the successor to St. Peter as the head of the Church on earth.
  • Bishop
    :
A bishop is typically the leader of a diocese and a main teacher of the Catholic faith. He makes the Sacraments available to the people of his diocese. He is a successor to the Apostles.
  • Priest
    :
Co-workers with their bishops who serve the faithful by building up and guiding the Church. Priests preach the Gospel of Christ and act in the person of Christ when they administer the Sacraments to the People of God, especially the Holy Eucharist. The task of a priest in the Old Testament was to guard and protect God’s dwelling place, the tabernacle, and to serve Him.
  • Magisterium
    :
The teaching authority of the Church and those who exercise that authority, the pope and all of the world’s bishops in union with the pope. The Magisterium of the Church authentically teaches and interprets the Word of God so that the faithful might be saved. (2051, 939)
