The Gospel of Matthew

Matthew’s Gospel is an orderly and reliable historical account of Jesus’ life and teachings.

Lesson Vocabulary

  • Apostle
    :
    A person who is sent out as a representative of someone else. Jesus chose twelve men to be His Apostles. . They preached Jesus’ message of salvation and worked miracles in His name. Jesus gave the Apostles special authority and made them the first leaders (bishops) of the Church. (96, 869, 935)
  • Evangelist
    :
    Someone who tells others the good News that Jesus came down from heaven and died on the Cross for our salvation. a title for one of the four gospel writers.
  • Gospel
    :
    “Good News.” The four books by the evangelists Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John that are the heart of the Scriptures. They proclaim the Good News of salvation won for us by the Passion, Death, and Resurrection of Jesus Christ. The Gospels are our primary source of knowledge of life of Jesus Christ. (139, 849, 1982)
  • Vocation
    :
    A calling by God to holiness. Everyone has a permanent vocation in life, either to priesthood or religious life, marriage, or consecrated single life. We are all called to pursue holiness in every situation we find ourselves in life. (44, 944, 2021, 2253, 2461, 1593, 1661)
  • Parable
    :
    A writing style of Scripture. Parables are short stories that communicate layers of truth. Jesus often used parables to teach His disciples.
  • Kingdom of Heaven (Kingdom of God)
    :
    God’s reign or rule over all things. During His public ministry, Jesus proclaimed that the Kingdom of God was at hand. The Church is the seed, or beginning, of the Kingdom here on earth. The Kingdom will be fulfilled in Heaven. (1060, 1725, 1726, 2556, 2857)
  • Genealogy
    :
    A writing style of Scripture. Genealogies record family ancestries and reveal important family connections between individuals in the Bible.
  • Messiah
    :
    The Hebrew word for “anointed one.” All of the kings descended from David were anointed as a sign of their kingship. This made all of the kings in the line of David “messiahs.” God promised the Chosen People that He would send the Messiah to free them from sin. Jesus is the Son of David and God’s promised Messiah and Savior. (453)
  • Covenant
    :
    A sacred permanent bond of family relationship. God entered in a series of covenants with mankind throughout Salvation History to invite us to be part of His divine family and to prepare us gradually and in stages and in words and deeds to receive the gift of salvation. (68-96)
