Lesson 8

Praying to the Virgin Mary

The aim of this lesson is for your children to discover the unique and honored role of Mary in Salvation History and the Church, how she is a model of prayer for us, and how we can bring our petitions to her.

Lesson Vocabulary

  • Immaculate Conception
    :
(n.): From the beginning of her life, the Virgin Mary was saved from Original Sin so that she could bear the Son of God within her. Mary was prepared by God to be a holy vessel for our salvation
  • Fiat
    :
“Let it be done.” Mary’s “yes” to God is her Fiat. It is her complete obedience to God, allowing His will to be done in her life.
  • Hail Mary
    :
A prayer that repeats the words of the Angel Gabriel’s greeting to Mary at the Annunciation of Jesus’ birth and Elizabeth’s greeting to Mary at the Visitation. The prayer also asks for Mary’s motherly intercession in our lives. We pray the Hail Mary during the Rosary three times at the beginning and ten times during each of the five decades.
  • Assumption of Mary
    :
The lifting up of Mary’s body and soul into Heaven at the end of her earthly life.
  • Magnificat
    :
The Magnificat is the prayer of praise and thanksgiving to God that Mary prayed when she visited her cousin Elizabeth after the Annunciation.
