The Eucharist Is Jesus’ Body and Blood

At Mass, the bread and wine are changed into the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus Christ in the Holy Eucharist.

Lesson Vocabulary

  • Chalice
    :
    The Chalice is the cup used at Mass to hold the wine that becomes Jesus’ blood.
  • Last Supper
    :
    The Last Supper was the final meal Jesus shared with His Apostles.
  • Eucharist
    :
    Jesus's body and blood.
  • Essential Elements of the Eucharist
    :
    That which is necessary for the bread and wine to be changed into the Holy Eucharist at Mass. They are: • The Words of Consecration spoken by the priest. • Bread and wine. The bread must be made of wheat, and the wine must be made from grapes. Nothing else can ever be used for the Eucharist.
  • Minister of the Eucharist
    :
    An ordained Catholic priest who presides over, or leads, the Mass. Only a priest may consecrate, or bless, the bread and wine so that they become Jesus’ Body and Blood.
  • Recipient
    :
    A person who received the Eucharist. To receive the Eucharist, the recipient must be: a baptized Catholic, prepared to receive the Eucharist, and in a state of grace.
  • Real Presence
    :
    Christ’s true Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity contained in the Eucharist under the appearances of bread and wine.
  • State of Grace
    :
    The condition of having no mortal sin on one’s soul.
  • Words of Consecration
    :
    The words Jesus said at the Last Supper to change the bread and wine into His Body and Blood. These same words are spoken by the priest during the Eucharistic Prayer to change bread and wine into the Eucharist.
