Unit 5 Teacher Introduction

Spirit of Truth, Classic Edition, Kindergarten

Jesus Christ is a role model who shows us the Way to Heaven, but He is much more than just a wise teacher. Jesus is our Savior. At the Last Supper, Jesus instituted a new covenant in His Blood. He offered His Body and Blood for the Apostles to eat and drink, and commanded the Apostles to celebrate Mass for all Christians. In the Eucharist we participate in the one eternal Holy Mass in Heaven and receive the Body of Christ. Jesus freely offered Himself for our sake. After the Last Supper, Jesus was arrested, scourged, and crucified. He suffered, died, and was buried; the Son of God truly did die. On the third day, Jesus rose from the dead. The Resurrection is the most important moment in the history of the world, and the “crowning truth” of our Faith. “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life” (John 3:16). By redeeming humanity on the Cross, Jesus made it possible for mankind to return to our Father in Heaven. After His Resurrection, Jesus spent 40 days with His disciples so that they might come to believe fully in all that He came to accomplish. During this time, Christ’s glorified body was veiled “under the appearance of ordinary humanity” (CCC 659). After 40 days, Christ ascended into Heaven, and His humanity entered irreversibly into divine glory. The story of the Ascension is recorded in the Gospels, as well as the first book of Acts of the Apostles. How fitting that He who “came from the Father” and entered the world now leaves the world and goes “back to the Father” (John 16:28). Jesus’ Ascension into eternal glory is our hope and our promise that we, too, can someday go where He has gone. Christ is not just one of the many ways we can to go there — He is the only Way.
