The Sacrament of Holy Eucharist

The Eucharist fulfills our Lord’s promise to give us Himself, the Bread of Life.

Lesson Vocabulary

  • Last Supper
    :
    The Last Supper was the final meal Jesus shared with His Apostles.
  • Eucharist
    :
    Jesus's body and blood.
  • Mass
    :
    The liturgical celebration and memorial of Christ’s sacrifice on the Cross and Resurrection from the dead. At every Mass, the priest changes the bread and wine into Christ’s Body and Blood in the Eucharist. The Mass is divided into two sections: the Liturgy of the Word and the Liturgy of the Eucharist. (1190, 1408, 1412)
  • Transubstantiation
    :
    Transubstantiation is the word used to describe the change of the bread and wine at Mass into the Body and Blood, soul and divinity of Jesus Christ.
  • Breaking of the Bread
    :
    The Breaking of the Bread is another title for the Mass used in the New Testament.
  • Memorial
    :
    A way of remembering and celebrating the past. The word “remember” means “to make present again.” In the Eucharist, Jesus’ sacrifice on the Cross is made present to us again.
  • Liturgy
    :
    The “public work” of the Church. It is the participation of the People of God in “the work of God,” which is our salvation from sin. The liturgy is our public worship as Christians.
  • Mystery
    :
    A mystery is a truth about God we can come to know only with God’s help.
  • Communion
    :
    Communion is a title for the Eucharist that refers to how all who receive the Body and Blood of Christ are united to Him and one another.
