Four Kinds of Desire and Happiness

We should seek enduring and transcendental happiness rather than shallow and fleeting happiness.

Lesson Vocabulary

  • Happiness
    :
    The fulfillment or attainment of a good we seek.
  • Self-consciousness
    :
    Being aware of oneself as meaningfully distinct from the world, and as being the same person throughout time.
  • Ego
    :
    Psychological term coined by Sigmund Freud that refers generally to a person’s inner self.
  • Empathy
    :
    The act of understanding and sharing in the feelings of others, particularly their sadness and suffering.
  • Conscience
    :
    The gift God gave human beings to be able to use reason in order to judge right from wrong. Our conscience is God’s voice in our hearts.
  • Silver Rule
    :
    Do not do unto others what you do not want done to you.
