Lesson 15

Grace and Virtues

Grace is the expression of God’s love that not only makes us His adopted children but also makes us good.

Lesson Vocabulary

  • Actual Grace
    :
(n.): Help given to us by God for the performance of good acts.
  • Charism
    :
(n.): A grace of the Holy Spirit which builds up the Church for the good of her members and the world.
  • Merit
    :
(n.): The reward which God promises and gives to those who love Him and by His grace perform good works. One cannot “merit” justification or eternal life, which are the free gift of God; the source of any merit we have before God is due to the grace of Christ in us.
  • Vice
    :
(n.): A habit acquired by repeated sin. Repentance for sin and confession may restore grace to a soul, but to remove the sinful habit requires much effort and self-denial, until the contrary virtue is acquired.
  • Cardinal Virtues
    :
(n.): Four virtues acquired through our own effort that play a pivotal role in the exercise of other virtues. They are the fruit and seed of morally good acts and help prepare the powers of human beings for communion with God’s love. They are prudence, justice, fortitude, and temperance.
  • Prudence
    :
(n.): A cardinal virtue that helps us discern what is good and then choose the correct means to accomplish it. It is the “charioteer of the virtues,” right reason in action.
  • Justice
    :
(n.): A cardinal virtue that is the constant and firm will to give their due to God and neighbor.
  • Fortitude
    :
(n.): A cardinal virtue that helps us persevere in the face of adversity and temptation.
  • Temperance
    :
(n.): The moral virtue that moderates the attraction of pleasures and provides balance in the use of created goods.
  • Theological Virtues
    :
(n.): Gifts infused by God into the souls of the faithful to make them capable of acting as His children and meriting eternal life. They are faith, hope, and charity (or love).
  • Faith
    :
(n.): A gift from God and a human act by which a person comes to know God and conform their minds, hearts, and wills to Him and the Truth He has revealed.
  • Hope
    :
(n.): The theological virtue by which we desire the Kingdom of God and eternal life and place our trust in all of God's promises to us.
  • Charity
    :
(n.): The theological virtue by which we love God above all things for His own sake and our neighbor as ourselves for the love of God.
