Baptism Removes the Stain of Original Sin and Makes Us Members of the Church

Baptism is the first Sacrament we receive and is the first of the Sacraments of Initiation.

Lesson Vocabulary

  • Sacrament
    :
    A sign of God’s grace that gives the grace that it signifies. In the early Church, the words sacrament and mystery were used to mean the same thing.
  • Sacraments of Initiation
    :
    The Sacraments of Initiation are the Sacraments that bring us into Christ’s Church on earth and strengthen us for Heaven. They are Baptism, Confirmation, Holy Eucharist.
  • Baptism
    :
    The first Sacrament of Initiation. In Baptism we are born into new life in Jesus. We need Baptism to go to Heaven because it takes away all sin.
  • Sign of the Cross
    :
    A short prayer that asks for the blessing of the Holy Trinity. We make the Sign of the Cross over our bodies while we say, “In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.”
  • Holy Water
    :
    Holy Water is water that has been blessed by a priest. It reminds us of our Baptism, bestows certain graces, and helps us on our way to Heaven.
  • Holy Oil
    :
    Holy oil is a blessed and perfumed oil that is used to anoint a person at Baptism and Confirmation.
  • Sin
    :
    A sin is something that we say, do, think, or fail to do that does not love God, our neighbor, or ourselves, as God has taught us.
