Lesson 4

The Celebration of the Sacrament of Confirmation

The matter, form, minister, recipient, effects, and symbols of the Sacrament of Baptism.
Anointing with oil has held special meaning since ancient times, and the Sacrament of Confirmation shares in this today.
Confirmation is sometimes called the “Sacrament of Christian maturity,” but it is important not to confuse spiritual maturity with physical maturity.
There have been many examples of young people throughout the centuries who have fought for Christ with the strength of the Holy Spirit and even given their lives for Him.

Lesson Vocabulary

  • Chrism
    :
Chrism is a blessed and perfumed oil that is used to anoint a person at their Baptism and when they receive the Sacrament of Confirmation.
  • Confirmand
    :
A person who is receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation.
  • Seal
    :
A symbol of belonging. Soldiers bear their leader’s symbol into battle and personal letters are marked with the author’s seal to ensure authenticity. Jesus proclaimed that He was marked with His Father’s seal, which He then gave to us as a share in His mission as priest, prophet, and king. We receive the indelible seal of the Holy Spirit in the Sacraments of Baptism and Confirmation, and men who are ordained to be deacons or priests, as well as bishops, receive a unique and permanent seal of the Holy Spirit. (1320)
  • Myron
