Lesson 6

Confirmation: Effects and Living the Sacrament

The scriptural basis, matter, form, minister, and effects of the Sacrament of Confirmation.

Lesson Vocabulary

  • Seal
    :
A symbol of belonging. Soldiers bear their leader’s symbol into battle and personal letters are marked with the author’s seal to ensure authenticity. Jesus proclaimed that He was marked with His Father’s seal, which He then gave to us as a share in His mission as priest, prophet, and king. We receive the indelible seal of the Holy Spirit in the Sacraments of Baptism and Confirmation, and men who are ordained to be deacons or priests, as well as bishops, receive a unique and permanent seal of the Holy Spirit. (1320)
  • Gifts of the Holy Spirit
    :
We receive the gifts from the Holy Spirit when we are in a state of grace. They are: wisdom, knowledge, understanding, counsel, fortitude, piety, and fear of the Lord. The anointing performed in Confirmation is a sign of the reception of these gifts.
