The Sixth Commandment

We are all called to chastity.

  • Adultery
    :
    (n.): Marital infidelity in thought or deed, or sexual relations between two partners, at least one of whom is married to another party.
  • Lust
    :
    (n.): A disordered desire for or inordinate enjoyment of sexual pleasure for its own sake, isolated from its procreative and unitive purposes.
  • Sexuality
    :
    (n.): An essential part of our human identity as being either male or female. Sexuality includes the physical, psychological, and emotional characteristics of men and of women, as well as our attitudes and need for love and friendship. Sexuality affects all aspects of the human person in the unity of our body and soul.
  • Spousal Meaning of the Body
    :
    (n.): Pope St. John Paul II’s phrase expressing how the human body includes right from the beginning the capacity of expressing love, specifically the love in which the person becomes a gift and by means of this gift fulfills the meaning of his being and existence.
  • Dignity
    :
    (n.): The quality of being worthy of honor or respect; possessing great value or worth.
  • Dual purposes of human sexuality
    :
    (n.): A phrase describing the essential puposes of the marital embrace: the unitive purpose (the good of the spouses) and the procreative purpose (the generation and education of children).
  • Conjugal relationship
    :
    (n.): A term describing the obligations, responsibilities, and interactions between a husband and wife.
  • Chastity
    :
    (n.): The true integration of sexuality within a person’s bodily and spiritual being. It includes an apprenticeship in self-mastery. Each of us is called to chastity.
  • Celibacy
    :
    (n.): The state of abstaining from marriage.
  • Continence
    :
    (n.): The state of abstaining from sexual activity.
  • Contraception
    :
    (n.): Any action taken by a man and woman engaging in sexual relations that actively and intentionally is contrary to conception or prevents the conception of a child.
  • Abstinence
    :
    (n.): The practice of refraining from indulging or partaking in something.
  • Fornication
    :
    (n.): Sexual intercourse between an unmarried man and an unmarried woman.
  • Masturbation
    :
    (n.): Deliberate stimulation of the genital organs in order to derive sexual pleasure.
  • Pornography
    :
    (n.): Removing real or simulated sexual acts from the intimacy of the partners in order to display them deliberately in film, photographs, or other media for the sexual gratification of others.
  • Incest
    :
    (n.): Sexual activity between family members or close relatives.
  • Infidelity
    :
    (n.): Unfaithfulness.
  • Polygamy
    :
    (n.): The practice of taking on multiple wives.
  • Indissoluble
    :
    (adj.): Permanent; unable to be destroyed.
  • Annulment
    :
    (n.): A declaration by a Church tribunal (a Catholic Church court) that a Marriage thought to be valid according to Church law actually fell short of at least one of the essential elements required for a binding union. Rather than dissolving a Marriage that already exists, by this declaration of nullity, the Church formally recognizes that a valid Marriage was never entered into in the first place.
  • In-vitro Fertilization
    :
    (n.): A procedure whereby a human being is conceived by taking eggs from a woman’s ovaries and combining them with a man’s semen (usually collected by masturbation) in a test tube (in vitro is Latin for “in glass”), and, after a few days of development, the growing embryos are then implanted in a woman’s uterus or frozen. Extra unwanted fertilized eggs are then destroyed.
  • Intrauterine insemination
    :
    (n.): A procedure where conception is attempted by placing sperm directly into the uterus through a thin catheter.
  • Surrogacy
    :
    (n.): The practice of artificially impregnating a woman who then carries and delivers the baby (to whom she may or may not be biologically related) in order to then give the baby to an infertile person or couple.
  • NaProTECHNOLOGY
    :
    (n.): A women’s health science that monitors and maintains a woman’s reproductive and gynecological health, providing medical and surgical treatments that cooperate completely with the reproductive system.
  • Natural Family Planning (NFP)
    :
    (n.): The general title for the scientific, natural, and moral methods of family planning that can help married couples either achieve or postpone pregnancies and which respect the unitive and procreative nature of the marital embrace.
